The population grew because of the gold ans silver rush. Miners who flocked to the "Pikes Peak" gold rush of 1859 stopped in Denver to buy supplies. The railroads brought rapid growth to a number of western towns. Omaha began to flourish as a meat-processing center for cattle ranchers in the area. Portland became a regional market for fish, grain and lumber. The southwest population grew because many people from mexico came there. They went mainly to Texas and New Mexico.

There were many reasons for the growth of population in western cities. One reason was that people were finding gold and silver in abundance, so many people moved west in hopes to get rich on gold ans silver. Another reason was there was lots of open land that was "unsettled". The only thing people needed to do to get land in the west was to push the Native Americans out, many people decided that they needed more space, so they moved west. The American Government started pushing the Native Americans into small reserves to make more land for the "American" people. The large number of new farms and ranches inspired many people to go west looking for work.

I agree with both Andrews. During this time period many "boomtowns" appeared. A boomtown is a town that have suddenl become popular because of oppertunities such as oiling and gold mining.

I believe what was going through peoples minds during that time were to make it big. They wanted to go to a place which would of course give oppertuniies to become instant millionares.
