Reformers worked to improve living
conditions, labor laws, the educational system, and the medical
profession. Reformers also sought to gain more rights for women and
African Americans. Back then, reformers were called mugwumps.

Reformers in the early 1900s were trying to solve many problems in America. These included women getting the right to vote; people wanting to prohibit liqueur; and racial tensions becoming an issue. The legal status of Native Americans had not been solved, and many Americans wanted to outlaw child labor. Workers were pushing for workman's compensation for those injured on the job. "The direct election of senators by voters was a major electoral reform." The reformers also wanted to be able to recall elected officials. The breaking up of monopolies throughout America was a big issue for the reformers to solve.

I noticed that some of the problems that reformers tried to solve in the early 1900s are still around today. Like living conditions. Everyday in the newspaper we hear about how the educational system needs help. One of the biggest topics today is healthcare and how people are needing help but do not have the money to pay for it. And Andrew do you have any idea why they were called mugwumps?

Many Reformers seeked to solve the many Problems facing the U.S at the time. Many problems occured such as discrimination agaisnt Women, Minorities, and the common day workers and thier condition of work. Many reformers proposed techniques to solving the many problems, some chose to go on strikes, with the workers not working, supply would go down, in which, thier demands would be met.

Reformers worked to improve things like terrible working conditions. For example: The Triangle Factory Fire in 1911. Workers were locked into their over-heated working area for hours so that they wouldn't leave. Their boss barred the door to make sure they would be able to stop working. Then suddenly a fire broke out and all the workers were trapped in while the fire was going on. This claimed to life of 146 immigrant workers. This was one of the worst working accidents since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution.

By the beginning of the 20th Century, the US was realizing the dire need for reform. With all the quick expanding and the industrializing of America, many of the rights of the certain groups in society were being over looked. The dire need for reform was soon apparent and the government realized it was their duty to aid the public in this reform. These changes were called the progressive reform movement. The beginning events leading up to, the meaning behind, to the accomplishments of the progressive reform movement, played a part in the attempt at improving America. The events leading up to the reform movement involved the lack of concern given to the poverty stricken citizens in America. The immigrant workers, especially the children, that were forced to work long, strenuous hours for little pay under extremely unhealthy conditions.

One of the most known reformers of the early 20th century was Jane Addams. She was disgusted by the poverty and slums. Jane Addams was an urban reformer and suffrage leader that founded Chicago’s Hull House. This was a settlement house. Another well-known reformer was Lillian D. Wald that founded the Henry Street Settlement House in New York. Settlement houses offered daycare, education and health care to the needy people of the slums. They opened these to help immigrants and the poor improve their lives.
